A distribution partnership – uniting global bearing and sealing technology leader SKF Vehicle Aftermarket components with engineering components distributor BMG – has been established to supply a complete vehicle aftermarket range.

The partnership strengthens local access to premium-quality replacement parts for the commercial transport and logistics industries, says BMG Automotive, Agricultural and Lubrication division business development manager Carlo Beukes.

An important segment of BMG’s automotive service is supporting the operators of trucks, trailers, buses and bakkies across Southern Africa with original-equipment manufacturer (OEM) components that perform consistently, even in challenging conditions and over long distances.

He adds that SKF Vehicle Aftermarket provides OEM-quality solutions for a range of truck brands, including DAF, Iveco, MAN, Mercedes-Benz, Renault, Scania and Volvo.

“Each component is precision-engineered and meets stringent global specifications, giving fleet managers and workshop teams the assurance of quality, safety and long service life.”

To complement mechanical reliability, the company incorporates lightweight component design, friction-reduction technologies and closed-loop production processes, says Beukes.

“By embracing sustainability-driven engineering, CO₂ emissions are reduced and service intervals are extended. This initiative supports the environmental targets of fleet operators without compromising on performance.”

Beukes explains that the SKF Vehicle Aftermarket components portfolio for heavy-duty vehicles covers key drivetrain and chassis systems. Wheel hub units and bearing kits are pre-assembled for one-piece replacement, reducing installation time and minimising premature failure risks.

“Steering and suspension components – including ball joints, tie rods, torque rods and stabiliser links – are manufactured to exacting tolerances and treated for corrosion resistance,” he says.

Transmission repair kits, coolant pumps, fan belts and tensioners maintain mechanical integrity and engine temperature control in demanding conditions, while “OEM-standard hub units and suspension assemblies reduce maintenance complexity”.

Further, SKF Vehicle Aftermarket’s steering and suspension range, which is guaranteed for 24 months after installation, uses high-performance grease formulations and natural-rubber bushings for optimal durability and driving comfort, says Beukes.

Wheel hub assemblies also integrate matched bearings, hubs and fastenings to allow for accurate installation and lower total cost of ownership through fewer warranty claims and reduced service intervals.

Beukes notes that BMG and SKF Vehicle Aftermarket are helping local fleet operators to adapt to new drivetrain technologies, including hybrid systems and battery-electric vehicles.

“SKF Vehicle Aftermarket products are chosen by the designers and manufacturers of most heavy commercial vehicles. Therefore, SKF Vehicle Aftermarket finds itself at the forefront of many new drivetrain technologies focusing on reducing emissions and improving reliability and durability.”

He adds SKF Vehicle Aftermarket has an extensive free and open online library, with fitting instructions, videos and technical data accessible to all users globally: “As vehicles become more advanced with integrated systems, correct maintenance knowledge is imperative.”

Immersive Virtual Reality Tool

To enhance technical training, SKF Vehicle Aftermarket has introduced the MechMaster VR Edition, an immersive virtual reality (VR) tool to help mechanics and technicians learn and troubleshoot mechanical systems.

“By leveraging the power of VR, SKF Vehicle Aftermarket has created a tool that enhances learning, improves skills and fosters collaboration. Whether you are a student, professional technician or a company looking to train staff, this tool offers a cutting-edge solution to meet your needs.”

In terms of operational efficiency and cost-effectiveness, SKF Vehicle Aftermarket products help South African fleet operators in sectors such as logistics and public transport to reduce downtime and lower operating costs.

“Well over half of the wheel bearings on new trucks today are designed and manufactured by SKF Vehicle Aftermarket. Therefore, fleet owner[s] can confidently replace the original equipment fitted to their fleet with an SKF Vehicle Aftermarket product and know that it was chosen by the manufacturer when the truck was developed,” add Beukes.

SKF Vehicle Aftermarket wheel bearings are engineered for longevity and fuel savings. Having acknowledged the ever-increasing pressure on fleet owners, SKF Vehicle Aftermarket engineers created a design that lowers friction by up to 63% to help reduce costs and emissions.

The bearing design, tested using the European Commission’s Vehicle Energy Consumption Calculation tool, can save up to 110 ℓ of fuel and 295 kg of CO₂ per truck a year.

“To help fleets calculate potential savings, SKF Vehicle Aftermarket has also published an online calculator where operators can enter mileage and fuel price data. This is SKF Vehicle Aftermarket’s commitment to real-life solutions for fleet owners and operators,” he concludes.
